WSJ: China Sentences Canadian Citizen to 11 Years for Espionage in Case at Heart of Diplomatic Standoff

Wed August, 2021, Age: 2 years

A Chinese court sentenced entrepreneur Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison on espionage charges and will have about $7,700 in personal assets confiscated. Mr. Spavor’s case, along with that of Mr. Kovrig, who was detained on the same day in December 2018, are widely seen as retaliation for Ottawa’s arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei.
