WSJ: A Hong Kong Dissident’s Daring Escape
Thu January, 2021, Age: 3 years
A new report from the Wall Street Journal details the daring escape of former Hong Kong opposition lawmaker Ted Hui last month. Hui was aided by Thomas Rohden and Anders Storgaard, two young members of the Danish China Critical Society, as well as the Danish politician Uffe Elbæk. The three came up with a daring and mischievous plan to sneak Hui and his family out of Hong Kong after he was arrested multiple times for protesting and released on bail. But their success has humiliated China, and pro-Beijing lawmakers in Hong Kong subsequently called for their extraterritorial prosecution under the Criminal Procedure Ordinance, raising the concerning possibility that Beijing will seek to apply its dissent-quashing laws more extensively beyond China’s borders. This could be achieved through the use of existing extradition agreements, or possibly by following Russia’s example and weaponizing Interpol and issuing international arrest warrants to harass its international foes.
