The private security firm FireEye has told the federal government that sophisticated hackers linked to the Chinese state group APT5 are believed to have compromised dozens of U.S. government agencies, defense contractors, financial institutions and other critical sectors. The Defense Department is not known to have been compromised in the current campaign. The intrusions are believed to have begun last June or earlier and are ongoing. They are distinct from a separate Chinese operation targeting Microsoft Exchange email servers earlier this year, which impacted potentially hundreds of thousands of private-sector companies but did not affect U.S. government agencies.
