Washington Post: California lawsuit against Chinese tech giant raises a thorny question

A group of anonymous Californian plaintiffs suing Tencent, the company that owns the Chinese mobile app WeChat, whose U.S. holdings are based in Palo Alto. The plaintiffs allege that WeChat’s practices violate their free speech and privacy rights, and are refusing to identify themselves to the defense team. Their lawyer argues that if Tencent learns their identities, Chinese authorities could pressure the company to turn over their information. They or their family members in China could then face punishment from Chinese authorities.
