Germany’s Interior Ministry has revealed that China has attempted to intimidate Hong Kong residents living in Germany. At a ‘pro-democracy’ march in Hamburg in 2019, counter demonstrators filmed and photographed marchers, presumably for the purpose of subsequent identification. “Since the start of the protests in Hong Kong, increasing attempts by Chinese state actors in Germany to influence public opinion in favor of the Chinese government as well as actions against supporters of the protests have been identified,” claimed the letter written by the Interior Ministry to the head of Germany’s human rights committee, Gyde Jensen. There are some 750 Hong Kongers with residency permits in Germany.
