According to two unnamed government officials, who spoke with the Times of India, new procurement rules that will go into effect June 15th may prohibit mobile carriers from using telecom equipment made by China’s Huawei. A similar ban exists in the United States. Reportedly, India’s potential banning of Huawei equipment stems both from security concerns and an interest in propping up domestic manufacturing of state of the art telecom equipment. China’s ZTE, another smaller telecom manufacturer, may also be booted from the Indian telecom market, according to another unnamed source. India has, however, begun fast tracking certain Chinese investment projects that had been sidelined since the two countries’ border stand-off last year.
