China on Sunday charged 47 pro-democracy Hong Kong activists with conspiracy to commit subversion for their role in an unofficial primary last year. The move has been met with international condemnation, with U.S. Sec. of State Antony Blinken saying in a tweet: “We condemn the detention of and charges filed against the pan-democratic candidates in Hong Kong’s elections and call for their immediate release. Political participation and freedom of expression should not be crimes. The U.S. stands with the people of Hong Kong.” Blinken later indicated that there are a couple of recourses for countries looking to counter China’s crackdown. These measures include denying the Chinese forms of technology which would assist in a crackdown of political expression, and refusing to import products made with forced labor.
