Stars and Stripes: Navy warship sails near Spratlys after US explicitly rejected Beijing’s South China Sea claims

A day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States officially considers China’s claims in the South China Sea to be illegitimate, the US Navy conducted a freedom of navigation operation near the Spratly Islands. The USS Ralph Johnson, a guided-missile destoyer, sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Spratly Islands, where China has reclaimed land and built military infrastructure.
