SCMP: Washington calls China’s tit-for-tat sanctions ‘baseless’

Last week, Beijing sanctioned six American individuals, in retaliation for earlier sanctions imposed by Washington on officials from the People’s Republic of China over Hong Kong, due to their role in restricting democracy and the rule of law. The white house press secretary said that “These actions are the latest examples of how Beijing punishes private citizens, companies and civil society Organisations as a way to send political signals, and further illustrate the PRC’s deteriorating economic climate and rising political risk.”
