SCMP: China-US relations: Premier Li Keqiang hopes both sides can find ‘common ground’ ahead of Alaska talks even if they ‘can’t work everything out any time soon’

A top level meeting between Chinese and U.S. officials is set to take place next week in Anchorage, Alaska. “We hope to see dialogue between the two countries in multiple areas and at various levels. Even if we can’t work everything out any time soon. Such an exchange of views will help boost trust and expel misgivings. It will also help us better manage and mitigate our differences,” said Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. This is a more conciliatory tone than the one struck by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken who has said that the meeting will not be the start of bilateral negotiations unless the Chinese addressed the U.S.’s myriad concerns ranging from economic policy to treatment of ethnic minority groups.
