SCMP: China seeks to expand Belt and Road to Afghanistan in name of security as U.S. withdraws troops

At a virtual summit between the foreign ministers of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi said that China seeks to expand its presence in Afghanistan through the Belt and Road Initiative amid the U.S.’ coming troop withdrawal. Wang applauded the U.S. withdrawal as an opportunity for the Afghan people to “truly control their destiny.” The three ministers also agreed to establish stronger dialogue among the countries.
