The role that China’s Sinovac coronavirus vaccine will play in China’s diplomatic endeavors was on full display in Indonesia, as the country embarked on one of the most ambitious vaccine drives in the world. As Indondesian President Joko Widodo became the first person in the country to be inoculated with the Sinovac vaccine, China’s foreign minister Wang Yi extolled the “brotherly relations between the two countries”. Wang also said of the Chinese-Indonesian partnership in tackling the coronavirus: “We have supported each other with medical supplies and have actively shared medical and diagnostic experience inside China despite the sharp increase in the demand for vaccines. We still overcame our difficulties and did not hesitate to respond to the need to provide vaccines to our friends in Indonesia.”
