SCMP: Australian journalist Cheng Lei’s arrest in China causes concern, press freedom fears
Mon February, 2021, Age: 2 years
A Chinese-Australian journalist, Cheng Lei, was formally arrested Monday under charges of “supplying state secrets”. Cheng worked as an anchor for China’s state-run broadcast network CGTN. Cheng was well known, and news of her arrest led to many of her fellow journalists expressing concern over her safety, “It’s distressing to think of the conditions she is under, and what sort of emotional and physical trauma she may be enduring. My thoughts are with her family, particularly her two young children,” said tech podcaster Elliott Zaagman, a friend of Cheng’s. Cheng was detained six months ago but was only formally charged today, amidst deteriorating relations between China and Cheng’s adopted home-country of Australia.
