Chinese officials aired a televised “confession” by Henley Lee, a Belizean national, of financing protests in Hong Kong in 2019. According to human rights group Safeguard Defenders, Lee is the fifth known person to make televised confessions of crimes against national security. Experts note that televised confessions in China are typically coercive and highly scripted to reinforce the state’s preferred narrative.
