Fri August, 2020, Age: 3 years
On Thursday, India announced a $500 million package to fund a project connecting the capital Male to three nearby islands. This will be the largest civilian infrastructure project in the Maldives, and steps up New Delhi’s diplomatic efforts in a region that China has been focusing on as part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). India has sought to regain diplomatic influence in the islands after a new administration led by PResident Ibrahim Solih took power following the defeat of pro-China strongman Abdulla Yameen in 2018 elections.
