The founder of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei has urged his company to “dare to lead the world” in software, pivoting away from hardware operations in the mobile and telecommunications sectors that U.S. sanctions have targeted over the last several years. In an internal memo, Ren said that Huawei’s focus on software would be protected because future developments in the field would be “outside of U.S. control and we will have greater independence and autonomy.” Under Trump, the U.S. waged a severe pressure campaign to encourage its allies to ban Huawei’s participation in national 5G networks and telecommunications infrastructure more broadly due to national security concerns. Ren also called on company staff to “absorb nutrients” through open source communities and seek to influence standards internationally. “Once we dominate Europe, the Asia Pacific and Africa, if U.S. standards don’t match ours, and we can’t enter the U.S., then the U.S. can’t enter our territory,” the note said.
