Before the COVID-19 pandemic, northern Chinese provinces were optimistic about their economic prospects, believing that their heavy industries would withstand shocks from the U.S.-China trade war. Economic impacts of the coronavirus, however, have hit northern China especially hard. Northern China also has an uncertain future beyond the pandemic as it is unclear whether companies are willing to keep investments in the region.
