The nascent audio based social media platform, Clubhouse, launched in 2020 that allows users to participate in and listen into conversations on a wide range of topics, has been banned in China. The platform had briefly allowed mainland Chinese users to participate in discussions on a wide range of topics, including “detention centers” in Xinjiang and Taiwan independence, that are usually banned in China. According to the anti-censorship website “GreatFire.org”, Clubhouse was blocked from Chinese users around 7pm Beijing time Monday. Clubhouse thus joins a host of other Western social media apps including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube that are either banned or throttled in China.
