Reuters: China says U.S. military in South China Sea not good for peace

On Saturday, a U.S. carrier group (comprised of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and three warships) entered the South China Sea to conduct a “freedom of navigation” patrol through the critical waterway. The presence of the U.S. carrier group appeared to anger China, which claims broad swaths of the South China Sea as its territory. A spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, Zhao Lijian, said “the United States frequently sends aircraft and vessels into the South China Sea to flex its muscles. This is not conducive to peace and stability in the region.” The appearance of the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the South China Sea over the weekend coincided with Chinese incursions of Taiwan’s “air defense identification zone” over the Pratas Islands in the South China Sea.
