Reuters: China rejects suggestion that it supported coup in Myanmar

We linked to an article earlier in the week that suggested that China may have had advanced knowledge of the military coup that was to unfold in Myanmar on Monday. This morning, China’s foreign ministry categorically denied such allegations. Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said, “relevant theories are not true. As Myanmar’s friendly neighboring country, we wish that all sides in Myanmar can appropriately resolve their differences, and uphold political and social stability.”
Two things helped spur the rumors that China had prior knowledge of the coup: 1. China’s top diplomat met last month with Myanmar’s military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup Monday 2. China has close ties with Myanmar’s military junta and the fallout from the coup is expected to draw Myanmar further into China’s orbit.
