Gilgit-Baltistan, the region of Pakistan also claimed by India as part of the wider Kashmir dispute, is facing local elections on November 15. Prime Minister Imran Khan has recently announced he would elevate the region to provisional provincial status, potentially opening the door to representation in the country’s National Assembly and Senate, which it currently does not have. As the question or wider representation looms, Reuters report that Gilgit-Baltistanis and their local politicians are focused on getting a share of Chinese investment dollars that have largely eluded them.
