Politico reports that the Pentagon is considering creating a permanent naval task force in the Pacific region to counter China’s growing military might, according to two people familiar with internal discussions. The plan would also include creating a named military operation for the Pacific that would enable the U.S. Defense Secretary to allocate more funding and resources to dealing with China. If finalized, these two initiatives would add significant muscle to the U.S.’s tough talk on China, as well as sending a strong message to its allies and security partners in the region, including Taiwan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand and Japan.
