In a sign that the Biden administration might encounter headwinds should it seek to form a coalition to contain China, Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel, echoed China’s President Xi Jinping’s warnings against the formation of alliances to isolate certain countries. Merkel, gave a virtual address to the World’s Economic Forum, in which she said, “I would very much wish to avoid the building of blocs. I don’t think it would do justice to many societies if we were to say this is the United States and over there is China and we are grouping around either the one or the other. This is not my understanding of how things ought to be.” Merkel went on to say that she had spoken with Xi on this subject and that, “he and I agree on that. We see a need for multilateralism.” Merkel’s fence-sitting posture comes on the heels of the newly minted EU-China investment agreement that will increase EU companies’ access to the Chinese market.
