Although France is currently the only European country with significant naval forces in the Indo-Pacific region, the rest of the European Union (EU) has come under heightened pressure to step up its strategy as the U.S. has increasingly identified China as a leading global security threat. EU countries will adopt a comprehensive European strategy toward the Indo-Pacific for the first time, which will cover issues ranging from reducing economic dependence on China to expanding Europe’s role in digitalization throughout Southeast Asia. According to a draft version, the strategy will also highlight “the importance of a meaningful European naval presence in the Indo-Pacific.”
