Nikkei Asia: China readies new law to ban companies on national security grounds
Tue October, 2020, Age: 2 years
Nikkei Asia reports that China is set to advance a new export law that would ban Chinese suppliers from dealing with specific foreign companies on national security laws. The draft emphasizes the safeguarding of national security and interests, and will be discussed at the 22nd session of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress, which runs until Saturday.
The draft clarifies that technical data related to the items covered by the law is also subject to export-control stipulations, and states that China will take countermeasures against countries and regions that abuse export-control measures and pose a threat to China’s national security and interests, according to the draft. The timing of the new law comes as the U.S. has used similar regulation to crack down on Huawei, and may signal that China will further escalate its tit-for-tat economic competition with the U.S. using the new draft export law.
