Military Times: US rejects nearly all Chinese claims in South China Sea

In a statement released on July 13, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the United States now regards nearly all Chinese maritime claims to be illegitimate. Previously, US policy insisted that the maritime dispute between China and smaller Southeast Asian countries should be resolved through UN-back arbitration. Although still technically neutral in the dispute, the announcement basically sides the US with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, who oppose China’s claims.
