China is pushing for a lack of encryption for its citizens’s private devices in order to maintain control of information and ensure its ability to surveil its people, including by limiting the use of HTTPS. However, as argued in this analysis in Lawfare, this policy leaves China and its citizens at cyber risk of attacks and theft by hackers.
