Two U.S. carrier strike groups, including the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Nimitz, conducted joint training operations in the waters of the South China Sea (the first time it has conducted such operations since July of last year). According to the U.S. Navy the exercises were “aimed at increasing interoperability between assets as well as command and control capabilities.” The Biden administration has labeled China as the U.S.’s “most critical challenge” and “most serious competitor.” Other Western military assets were also reported in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. According to France’s defense chief, a French nuclear attack submarine, the Emeraude, and a tender conducted a patrol through the waterway over the weekend.
