U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken became the third high-level U.S. official in a week to confirm that the Senkakus Islands, a series of uninhabited islands referred to as the Diaoyu islands in Japan, fall under Article 5 of the U.S.-Japan Security treaty. Blinken told Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi that there was no change to the U.S. position that it would help defend territories (including the Senkakus) under Japan’s administration from an armed attack. The pronouncement was made on the same day that Japan’s Coast Guard spotted two Chinese ships in the vicinity of the Senkakus, the 10th straight day that Chinese ships had been spotted in the area.
