China has expressed some hope that should high-level talks between the Chinese and the U.S., that are to begin Thursday in Anchorage, Alaska, go smoothly that they form the predicate for direct talks between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping. The Chinese are hoping to schedule the meeting on Earth Day in April to demonstrate both countries’ shared commitment to environmental concerns. Both China and the U.S. have conceded that the high level Anchorage talks are unlikely to yield any major concessions from both sides. In recent years the U.S. and China have sparred over a raft of topics, including: Hong Kong, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the treatment of Chinese Muslims in Xinjiang Province.
