During a monthly press conference, Chinese Defense Minister Wu Qian, when asked about recent tensions with Taiwan, warned the “‘Taiwan independence’ elements: those who play with fire will burn themselves, and ‘Taiwan independence’ means war”. China has in the past week conducted large scale incursions of Taiwan’s “air defense zone”, flying fighter jets and bombers over the Taiwan administered Pratas Islands. According to the Independent: “Taiwan’s mainland affairs council said China should not underestimate the island’s determination to defend its sovereignty and uphold freedom and democracy.” U.S. relations with Taiwan grew more intimate during the Trump administration and, thus far, the Biden administration appears to be holding a similar course, having invited a Taiwanese official to the Biden inauguration ceremony.
