Some Indian strategists point to ominous signs that might indicate impending Chinese military maneuvers in the Ladakh region of India and China’s disputed border. According to the Hindustan Times, “there has been no withdrawal of any PLA troops from the contested points and China has used the stand-off to build advanced landing grounds across the Daulet Beg Oldi sector in Tianwendian, humongous shelters to house personnel and a shorter link from Hotan airbase to Karakoram pass.” According to a senior commander quoted in the article, one of the zones of potential Chinese military incursion could be around the “Depsang bulge”. The article indicates that Chinese plans may be impacted by the tenor of the incoming Biden administration but that Indian strategists would not expect direct American intervention to help settle disputed territorial claims.
