An article in the state media organ Global Times has called for the Chinese government to intervene in the controversial $40 billion sale of the UK semiconductor firm Arm Holdings by Japanese investment firm Softbank to the US’s Nvidia. The deal has raised concerns about potential job losses or the loss of valuable IP which may result from the deal, but the British government has so far avoided involvement in the deal. The Global Times has raised fears that the sale would restrict China’s future access to Arm’s technology, which is ubiquitous in modern smartphones. An American-owned Arm would be subject to CFIUS restrictions which have already hurt Huawei’s access to high-tech microchips.
