In an announcement Thursday, China’s Commerce Ministry averred that it would “take all necessary measures” to protect Chinese companies’ legitimate rights to compete in foreign markets. The commerce ministry was specifically referencing Sweden where Chinese telecom companies Huawei and ZTE have been excluded from participating in a 5g spectrum auction on Tuesday to supply the country with 5g equipment and infrastructure. In October of last year, Sweden, citing national security concerns, banned its telecom operators from using equipment or technology supplied by the two Chinese companies. Spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, Gao Feng, reacted to news of the auction saying, “We urge Sweden to immediately correct its approach, considering the overall position of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, and meet China halfway to find a workable solution”.
