The U.S. State Department responded Wednesday to reports emanating from the BBC of widespread rape and abuse at Uighur “re-education” camps in the Chinese province of Xinjiang. A State Department spokesman told Reuters: “these atrocities shock the conscience and must be met with serious consequences.” The State Department Spokesman did not specify what actions the Biden administration would take in light of these revelations but insisted that China should allow monitors and observers into the camps. In the final days of the Trump administration, the U.S. State Department found that China’s actions with regards to the Uighur population constituted a genocide; newly minted Secretary of State Antony Blinken agreed with that determination when he spoke before a Senate Foreign Relations Committee in January.
