The World Health Organization, in a rare rebuke of China, announced that a team of WHO specialists investigating the origins of the coronavirus had been blocked from entering the country. WHO has been negotiating with Chinese authorities for months to begin an investigation into the pandemic’s origins. WHO’s Director General said that it came as a surprise that China was not permitting the team to enter the country. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, said that China was cooperating with WHO’s investigation and implied that any delay was merely out of a precaution to “ensure that the international expert group that comes to China can work smoothly”.
