CNN: UK prepares to welcome thousands of Hong Kongers fleeing national security law

The UK is expecting potentially tens of thousands of migrants from Hong Kong to wash on its shores as a new visa for Hong Kongers takes effect this Sunday. Hong Kong was of course at one point a British colony. The new visa was initiated as a response to the passage of the much maligned National Security Law in Hong Kong last year that dramatically cracked down on democratic elements within Hong Kong and led to the arrests of scores of journalists, politicians and protesters. The UK announced that it would provide a path to citizenship for holders of British National Overseas Passports that were introduced in the final years of British rule over Hong Kong. Under the new guidelines, holders of BNOP’s will be eligible, along with their immediate family to travel to the UK to live, study or work and will be eligible for full UK citizenship within six years of arrival. The UK’s offering to Hong Kongers has outraged the Chinese who announced that they would no-longer recognize BNOP’s, potentially complicating the plans of scores of Hong Kongers from emigrating to the UK.
