Based on calculated the floor areas of compounds bearing the hallmarks of prisons and internment camps in the region and compared them to China’s own prison and detention construction standards, Buzzfeed estimates that 1.01 million people can be locked up in Xinjiang at the same time. That’s enough space to detain or incarcerate more than 1 in every 25 residents of Xinjiang simultaneously and adds pressure for the international community to respond to the allegations of human rights violations.
