Robert Work, the former deputy secretary of defense who led the Pentagon’s push for artificial intelligence in 2016, says that the Department of Defense is “not doing enough” to win a race for AI against China. Work, now the vice-chair of Congress’s National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence, calls for strengthening the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) and possibly even replicating the Chinese model of a single unified Strategic Support Force, which oversees satellites, cyberspace, electronic warfare, and information warfare. For the US to keep up requires not only funding, Work said, but also a new sense of urgency and new forms of organization.
