BBC: Uyghur imams targeted in China’s Xinjiang crackdown

According to research published by the Uyghur Human Rights Project, 630 imams and other religious figures have been detained since 2014, with evidence that 18 clerics died in detention. At least 304 have been sent to prison instead of China’s notorious “re-education” camps. Amid its crackdown in Xinjiang, China has sought to tie Islam to extremism to defend its repressive policies.
