The Trump administration is trying to pass through a ‘midnight’ rule change that would increase scrutiny of Chinese government influence on American education (both at the University level, and K-12 education). Chinese influence on Chinese language and cultural courses in American schools has long been a source of concern, particularly among Republican lawmakers. The Trump administration has been particularly outspoken on the dangers posed by Chinese meddling in U.S. education curricula; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently called for the shuttering of Confucius Institutes across the country (Confucius Institutes are staffed by the Chinese Ministry of Education). The proposed rule change would force schools, universities and student groups to disclose any potential partnerships or financial transactions with Confucius Institutes.
