A left-wing American blog called The Grayzone has become well-known for its repeated denials of China’s human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. Chinese foreign ministry officials and state media have cited The Grayzone with increasing frequency in recent months as they cast doubt on accusations of Chinese state atrocities against oppressed minorities. The site’s founder, Max Blumenthal, describes himself as being anti-American imperialism and has previously called into question reports of human rights abuses carried out by the Assad regime. Blumenthal is also an occasional commentator on Russian media outlets including RT and Sputnik.
