Asia Times: China’s Pakistan investments a double-edged sword

As Islamabad’s largest foreign direct investment contributor, China has invested in Pakistan’s state-owned enterprises and infrastructure. China’s interest in Pakistan is driven in its desire for cheap labor, raw materials and greater access to regional markets. Nonetheless, there has been domestic pushback against China’s growing presence as China operates by establishing its own firms rather than partnering with local businesses, causing many projects to enrich only Beijing rather than Pakistanis.
