In line with mainland China’s attempts to consolidate control over Hong Kong, commemorative events for the Tiananmen Square Massacre were banned this year. For years since the People’s Liberation Army’s bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protestors on June 4, 1989, Hong Kong has been able to hold vigils that attracted tens of thousands of people. Officials have banned events this year citing the COVID-19 pandemic. While officials have warned against holding commemorative events, online users have called on residents to dress in all black and light a candle to informally mark the anniversary.
