China announced that it would conduct military exercises this week. China’s Maritime Safety Administration posted a notice barring vessel entry into a portion of the Gulf of Tonkin along the western coast of the Leizhou Peninsula from January 27th to January 30th. The notice did not provide any details as to the size or nature of the South China Sea exercises. Announcement of the pending military drills comes just a day after China admonished the U.S. for sailing an aircraft carrier group through the contested waters of the South China Sea.
